We are grateful that you have taken the time to visit our website, and we pray that as you learn more about our church, you will see a people who deeply love Christ, cherish His Word, and desire to make Him known.
At the heart of our church is a simple commitment drawn from Acts 2:42: “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” That verse shapes both our vision and our ministry. We desire to be a church devoted to biblical truth, genuine fellowship, Christ-centered worship, fervent prayer, and faithful Gospel witness.
Because we believe that God’s Word is sufficient and lifegiving, we are committed to the expository preaching of Scripture, walking chapter by chapter and verse by verse through the Bible so that we may hear not merely the opinions of man, but the voice of God through His Word. Our aim is to exalt Christ, equip believers for faithful living, and proclaim the Gospel clearly to all.
Whether you are searching for a church home, seeking answers about the Christian faith, or simply looking for encouragement, we want you to know that there is a place for you here. Our prayer is that you would encounter the grace and truth of Jesus Christ and grow in the joy of following Him together with His people.
We would love the opportunity to worship with you and serve your family in any way we can.
Our History
Founded in 1714, Oakland Baptist Church stands as the oldest active Baptist church in Virginia. For more than three centuries, the Lord has faithfully preserved this congregation as a witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ through times of growth, hardship, revival, and change.
Today, while grateful for our rich heritage, our desire is not simply to honor the past, but to continue carrying the unchanging truth of the Gospel into the present generation and beyond. By God’s grace, we remain committed to making disciples who make disciples for the glory of God.
Mission & Vision
OBC's Mission
Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ who make disciples of Jesus
Christ, for the glory of God.
OBC's Vision
We will accomplish this by devoting ourselves to the apostles’ teaching, to
fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer with glad and generous hearts.
(Acts 2:42)
Church Covenant
We will walk together in brotherly love, exercise affectionate care and watchfulness over each other, and lovingly admonish and entreat one another as occasion may require, directed by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 12:10)
We acknowledge that all born-again believers have been endowed with spiritual gifts as outlined in Romans 12. Circumstances should not impede believers in exercising these gifts. Likewise, believers should not refuse when opportunities to use them present themselves.
We commit to work together in Christian love, to advance God’s will for this church and community, and to be enthusiastic in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior.
We pledge our best efforts to grow spiritually and to support and encourage spiritual growth of others. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
We promise to support this church’s ministries with our spiritual and financial gifts.
We promise to attend and participate in the programs of this church. We will not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, nor neglect to pray for ourselves and others.
We recognize the Great Commission and pledge our support to home and foreign missions in spreading the Word of God to all.
We promise to educate our children in the ways of Jesus, to participate in public and private devotionals, and to work diligently to bring the Word of God to nonbelievers, both friend and foe alike.
We commit to lead by example, to be fair in our dealings with one another, and to be faithful in fulfilling our promises.
We pledge to discourage the abuse of alcohol and any mind-altering substances, and to encourage those with addiction issues to seek out whatever help is necessary. (Ephesians 5:18)
We promise to support one another in times of need by deed and encouraging words. (Galatians 6:2)
We pledge to always ask, “What Would Jesus Do?” and to act accordingly. We will seek, through the leading and working of the Holy Spirit, to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and remembering that we are new creations in Christ, we are obligated to live a new and holy life.
We promise that if we leave this church, we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this Covenant and the principles of God’s Word.
